How much does social media management cost in South Africa?
Monthly social media management in South Africa runs from about R2,000 for a freelancer on one platform to R30,000 or more for a full-service agency including paid advertising. LeviteAVC retainers start at R11,500 a month, covering strategy, editing, posting and reporting.
What are you actually paying for?
Most quotes bundle four separate jobs into one monthly number, which is why comparing them is so difficult. Splitting them out makes it obvious where a price is coming from.
- Strategy. Deciding what gets posted, to which platform, and why. Cheap quotes usually skip this and post whatever is to hand.
- Content production. Making the thing. This is the largest variable by far, and the difference between original work and a stock template with your logo on it.
- Management. Scheduling, posting, first comments, and keeping the calendar moving.
- Reporting. Telling you what happened in language you can act on.
Ask any agency to split their number across those four. If they cannot, the number is not really built on anything.
What moves the price up or down?
- Platform count. Three platforms costs less than five. The jump is smaller than people expect, because one idea usually feeds several channels.
- Posting volume. Nine finished posts a month costs less than sixteen.
- Whether filming is included. Some agencies average a shoot into the monthly fee. It looks tidy and it hides what you are paying for, including in months when nothing was filmed.
- Whether ad spend is marked up. It should not be. Ad spend belongs on your own account.
- Compliance overhead. Regulated industries need content reviewed before it goes out, and that review is real work. This is why dental, aesthetics, chiropractic and legal sit above the base rate.
- Approval layers. A business where three people must sign off every post costs more to service than one where the owner replies the same day.
What does the South African market actually look like?
| Roughly | What you tend to get |
|---|---|
| R2,000 – R5,000 | A freelancer on one or two platforms, usually scheduling content you supply. |
| R5,000 – R11,000 | A small studio or solo operator. Some original content, limited strategy, reporting on followers. |
| R11,000 – R25,000 | Proper management with original content across several platforms, a real calendar, and reporting on enquiries. |
| R30,000+ | Full-service agency including paid advertising management and larger production budgets. |
These are broad bands, not a survey. They are here to show the shape of the market so a quote can be placed in context rather than judged in isolation.
What does LeviteAVC charge?
| Retained | Three platforms, nine finished posts a month, first comment on every post, monthly report. | R11,500/mo |
| Retained plus | All five platforms, sixteen posts a month, motion graphics and typography video in-house, fortnightly reporting call. | R23,500/mo |
| Embedded | Multi-site and group accounts. Named lead, quarterly calendar, priority shoot days. | On application |
Both tiers exclude ad spend and filming, and carry a three month minimum term. Paid social management is a separate add-on at R5,500 a month, and an additional platform is R3,500 a month.
Filming is quoted per shoot day rather than averaged into the fee, so you only pay for the days you use. A full day is R12,500 and a half day R7,500. A typical month with one shoot day lands between R19,000 and R24,000 depending on tier. Video we can make without a shoot, such as motion graphics and typography pieces, or edits cut from footage you supply, is part of the retainer.
Ad spend is paid directly to the platform on your own account and is never marked up, which means you keep the receipts and the audience data even if you later work with someone else.
Does it cost more for my industry?
Somewhat, and for a specific reason. Regulated industries need content checked against advertising rules before it goes out, and patient or client imagery needs consent handled properly. That review is genuine work, so those bands sit above the base rate.
| Legal | LPC advertising rules, considered authority content | R14,000 – R28,000 |
| Aesthetics | HPCSA rules plus POPIA consent on before-and-after | R13,000 – R26,000 |
| Dental | POPIA consent on patient content | R12,000 – R25,000 |
| Chiropractic | AHPCSA rules plus patient consent | R12,000 – R25,000 |
| Solar | High-value considered purchase, install footage | R12,000 – R24,000 |
| Logistics, wellness, spa | Base rate | R11,500 – R23,500 |
One warning worth taking seriously
Below about R3,000 a month, the management fee consumes the whole budget and there is nothing left to actually make content with. At that level you are paying someone to reschedule the same few posts. If a quote looks too good, ask what is actually being produced for it.
Five questions to ask any agency before you sign
- How many finished posts a month, and who makes them? "Content creation" can mean original work or a stock template with your logo dropped on it.
- Is filming included, and what happens in a month with no shoot? If a shoot is averaged into the fee, you are paying for it whether or not it happens.
- Whose account does the ad spend sit on? If it is theirs, you lose the audience data and the history when the relationship ends.
- What does the monthly report actually measure? Follower counts are the easiest number to grow and the least connected to revenue.
- Who owns the content and the accounts? The answer should be you, in writing, without argument.
The answers matter more than the number at the bottom of the quote. Two agencies at the same monthly price can be delivering wildly different amounts of actual work.
Questions people ask
What's a typical monthly price for social media management in South Africa?
Monthly social media management in South Africa runs from about R2,000 for a freelancer on one platform to R30,000 or more for a full-service agency including paid advertising. LeviteAVC retainers start at R11,500 per month covering strategy, editing, posting and reporting. Filming is quoted per shoot day rather than averaged into the monthly fee, and ad spend is paid directly to the platform on your own account, never marked up.
Why do prices vary so much between agencies?
Platform count, posting volume, whether content is originally produced or templated, whether filming is bundled in, and whether reporting covers enquiries or just follower counts. Two quotes at the same monthly price can represent very different amounts of actual work.
Is filming included in a monthly social media retainer?
At LeviteAVC, no. Filming is quoted per shoot day, at R12,500 for a full day and R7,500 for a half day, so you only pay for the days you use. Video that can be made without a shoot, such as motion graphics and typography pieces or edits from footage you supply, is included in the retainer.
Should an agency mark up my ad spend?
No. Ad spend should be paid directly to the platform on your own account, so you keep the receipts, the audience data and the campaign history even if you later change agency. LeviteAVC never marks up ad spend.
What is the cheapest social media management worth paying for?
Below about R3,000 a month the management fee consumes the entire budget and there is nothing left to make content with. At that level you are paying someone to reschedule the same few posts rather than produce anything new.
